On many carriers, picking any seat at booking now costs money, and picking a good one costs considerably more.

The most reliable free lever is check-in timing. Most airlines release a block of unassigned seats when online check-in opens, typically twenty-four to forty-eight hours before departure, and those are allocated free on a first-come basis.

Structural knowledge helps more than luck. On twin-aisle aircraft the rear of the cabin often has an empty row on non-peak departures; bulkhead rows are usually blocked for families; and the row in front of an exit row frequently does not recline, which is why it stays free.

The row in front of an exit row usually does not recline. That is exactly why it is still free.

Loyalty status still outperforms every trick, and the lowest tier of most programmes — reachable with two or three flights — is often enough to unlock free standard seat selection.

One honest caveat: if you are travelling as a group with young children, pay. Airlines are obliged in some jurisdictions to seat children with an adult, but the interpretation varies, and an argument at the gate is a poor use of a holiday.

Seat fees are now the second-largest ancillary revenue line for most carriers.
