Why go
Imlil is not a city but it functions as one for walkers: a road head at 1,740m where the tarmac stops, the mules start, and the Toubkal massif rises directly behind the village.
Five things to do
- 01
Toubkal in two days
Refuge overnight, summit at dawn.
- 02
A mule-supported valley trek
Three days, village to village.
- 03
Tuesday souk at Asni
Livestock, mint, and no souvenirs.
- 04
Tamatert pass
A half-day walk with the whole range in view.
- 05
Tea with a gîte family
Usually the best meal of the trip.
Neighbourhoods
Imlil
Guides, gîtes and the last shop before the mountain.
Aroumd
A terraced village twenty minutes' walk up-valley.
Ouirgane
Lower, warmer, good for a soft landing.
Aït Bouguemez
The 'happy valley', a long drive east and worth it.
Getting around
Buy the transport card on arrival — every city on this list has one, and it is cheaper than single fares within about four journeys. Walking covers more than the map suggests: most of the districts above are within thirty minutes of each other on foot.
Taxis and ride apps are worth it late at night and when you are carrying luggage. Everything else is faster on the metro, the tram or the ferry, in that order.
Where to eat
The rule that holds in Marrakesh Atlas is the rule that holds everywhere: eat at the busy place, at the hour the locals eat, and order the thing the kitchen makes most of. Reserve for dinner in the districts above; lunch rarely needs it.
